What size shelter do I need?
The formulas below will help you determine the size shelter, for either standing room or sitting room, respectively.
Room for standing: number of people x 3 sq ft = shelter size
Room for sitting: number of people x 5 sq ft = shelter size
Will the shelter keep my family safe during a tornado?
American Shelters & Safe Rooms are designed to withstand an F5 tornado with winds of more than 250 miles per hour. Our shelters have been tested to exceed FEMA and ICC building code requirements.
How does the shelter stay secure during a storm?
We use an anchoring system to secure the shelter to an existing or a new concrete foundation. Each is secured by drilling 5/8" x 4" holes and inserting anchor bolts every 12" all around the shelter to ensure the shelter stays in place during storms.
Can I get out of the shelter if the door is locked?
The shelters have an outward opening door to maximize the interior space. If debris blocks the door, interior panels can be removed to allow the door to open inward so occupants can exit the shelter safely.
How can we use the shelter as a safe room?
The steel plate is ballistic rated and tested. Each shelter has a standard 3-point locking and 3-point hinge system that has been engineered and tested to withstand the force of a F5 tornado. Shelters also have an option for a security grade dead bolt system that is tamper proof in the event of a break-in.
